Vacancy Short Description : To liaise with the Estates Operations Manager and Team Leaders, ensuring the efficient operation of the Grounds Maintenance Team and carrying out duties at West Suffolk Hospital.
Qualifications Required : Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to establish course suitability. The College will carry out an interview process plus Maths and English screening to assess suitability for our apprenticeship programme.
Applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs including English and Maths at grades A-E or 9- 2. Evidence of qualifications will be required.
Vacancy Full Description : To communicate and liaise with staff from other departments or customers in order to arrange suitable times for the use of cutting equipment near open windows, pavements, roads or car parks and maintain good working relationships with other staff.
• Provide notices to warn public and staff of work activity.
• To develop a close working relationship with other members of the Estates Department and assist with advice on technical aspects including servicing of machinery.
• To ensure effective communication with other members of the team and to participate in team meetings and briefings.
• To contribute to the continual improvement of gardens and grounds on the West Suffolk Hospital and outlying sites.
• Control of garden machinery in a safe manner, reporting any faults to the Team Leaders and not attempt to rectify yourself until assessed or instructed to do so.
• To comply with Health and Safety requirements to ensure personal safety and the safety of colleagues.

Skills Required : This post requires a dedicated, reliable and responsible person who has interest in a gardening career to maintain the upkeep of the estate.
Future Prospects : The Estates & Facilities Directorate is looking to recruit a Band 2 Gardener working 37.5 hours per week. The post holder will have the option to complete a 20 month intermediate apprenticeship in horticulture based at West Suffolk Hospital which includes module assessments undertaken by Easton & Otley College in the workplace. This is achieved by a variety of techniques tailored to meet a student’s learning style. An E-Portfolio will be provided to set, track and support the post-holder. The position will work alongside existing Estates personnel to gain the skills necessary to complete the apprenticeship in the given time.
Training to be Provided : Qualification: Horticulture Framework Level 2
College Attendance: No regular attendance
Training for all job specific tasks will be given. In addition the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make on-site visits every 6-8 weeks. There may be the occasional need to attend either the Otley or Easton campus for short training courses and tests.
Other Information : Pay Rates: The current NMW rate for Apprentices is £3.70 per hour with effect from 1st April 2018. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the Apprentice National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent in training.
