Vacancy Short Description : An exciting opportunity to assist vets and nurses at an equine veterinary clinic as well as being involved in the general care of equine inpatients/out patients and vets own horses.

 

Qualifications Required : Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to establish course suitability. Applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs including English and Maths at grades A-E or 9- 2. Evidence of qualifications will be required. Apprentices need to be employed for minimum of 30 hours a week in the industry with a contract of employment.
Vacancy Full Description : An exciting opportunity to experience all aspects of an equine veterinary practice. Assisting vets and nurses with a huge variety of tasks on the yard, in the clinic and the office. Handling and care of horses mainly at the clinic, but additionally the vet’s own horses to ensure a full spectrum of routine horse care is achieved. (horses turn out/ rug changing/ grooming/ tack cleaning / mucking out / bedding / feed / field maintenance and poo pick) Cleaning and maintaining equipment and work areas; you will learn and implement biosecurity in the stables and clinic. You will be working as part of the team investigating poor performance and lameness predominantly by restraining, trotting in hand or lunging horses for the vets. You will assist the vets and nurse during the administration of medical care whilst also being responsible for some basic horse care.

Working Week : Standard week 37.5hours with some flexibility required
Salary : £150.00 Per Week

Full driving license and own transport as locations are rural.
Future Prospects : Apprenticeships are a new field for Deben Valley Equine and we hope over the years to develop a rolling program of more than one apprentice so that the longer standing apprentice can act as an extra mentor for the new apprentice. Realistically, as the practice continues to grow it is possible that a permanent position for a clinic assistant would be created for the right person.
Training to be Provided : Qualification: Intermediate Apprenticeship in Horse Care
College Attendance: none, unless top up required
Training for all job specific tasks will be given. In addition, the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make on-site visits every 6-8 weeks. There may be the occasional need to attend either the Otley or Easton campus for short training courses and tests.
Other Information : Pay Rates: The current NMW rate for Apprentices is £3.70 per hour with effect from 1st April 2018. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the Apprentice National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent in training. Working Week: Standard week 37.5hours. Some flexibility of exact hours to incorporate routine horse care away from the clinic may be necessary along with variability at other staff annual leave times. ½ hour unpaid lunchbreak M,Tu,Th &F. (1/2 day Wednesday)

Shortlisting/Interviews - Shortlisting and interviews will take place throughout the duration of the vacancy ad. This may mean that the vacancy could close before the published cut-off date should suitable candidates be found.
Things to consider : Some work will be outside therefore suitable warm and waterproof clothing will be necessary. Clothing must be safe around horses. No jewellery. Strong boots, gloves and a riding hat conforming to BHS 2016 hat standards will be required when handling horses.
