Qualifications Required : Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to establish course suitability. Applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs including English and Maths at grades A-E or 9- 3. Apprentices need to be employed for minimum of 30 hours a week in the industry with a contract of employment.
Vacancy Full Description : Rattlerow has continuously invested in the business over 60 years making It is a top place to learn everything about the highest standards of pig rearing, breeding and welfare.
You will be working on a commercial breeding herd of 1400 sows (across 2 sites), working in all departments from Farrowing to Weaning to Serving the animals. Work will include:
• Feeding, bedding,
• Animal health and welfare,
• Record keeping,
• Learning stockmanship and observation
• Handling, weighing and moving pigs
• Breeding and serving stock,
• How to use Artificial Insemination AI
This is an extremely physical role and will require long hours at times, however you will be working alongside a highly skilled, vibrant team who will help show you the ropes. This is an outdoor pig farm so be aware that you will be outside in all weathers . As this is an apprenticeship role, you will receive enormous amounts of hands on experience from your managers, along with lots of external training. Rattlerow Farms has recently won the ‘Investor In Training Award,’ at the National Pig awards which is an enormous accolade to the investment they show in each and every individual the employ.
All animals are looked after to RSPCA Assured Standards so candidates must have a focus on welfare and enjoy an active job.

Working Week : Paid working hours are 7-4 Monday to Thursday and 7-3 of Fridays. 1 hour break for lunch every day 3

Skills Required : Candidates must have a full driving licence. An affinity with animals, have good observation skills and excellent attention to detail. Someone who is tidy and an accurate record keeper. Tractor experience would be ideal but is not a necessity
Future Prospects : Career progression is extremely important to Rattlerow and we have hired people in the past that have achieved management status within 3-5 years.
Training to be Provided : College attendance in six weekly blocks throughout the year
We will put candidates on courses for Telehandler and Schaffer’s
Training for all job specific tasks will be given. In addition, the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make on-site
Other Information : Pay Rates: The current NMW rate for Apprentices is £3.70 per hour with effect from 1st April 2018. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the Apprentice National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent in training. The role will be on an outdoor pig farm. This is great summer time, however winter time can be tricky so we are looking for people that like being outdoors.
It is essential that you do not come into contact with any other pig herds, for example on another farm, small holding or via a pet pig.
