Vacancy Short Description : Are you a practical person with a passion for horticulture? Ipswich Borough Council is looking to appoint two Grounds Maintenance apprentices to work within our beautiful & historic parks and open spaces.
Qualifications Required : Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to establish course suitability. Applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs including English and Maths at grades A-E or 9- 3. Evidence of qualifications will be required. Apprentices need to be employed for minimum of 30 hours a week in the industry with a contract of employment.
Proof of qualifications will be required before you can be accepted onto the apprenticeship.
Vacancy Full Description : One Apprentice will be based at Christchurch Park hub and the other at Chantry Park hub.
Day to day:
You will be working as part of a busy team maintaining our beautiful parks and open spaces to a high standard, whilst learning from experienced colleagues.
You will be genuinely interested in a horticultural maintenance career, and be keen to learn new skills.
You will enjoy working outside in all weathers, be a reliable and conscientious team member, and be someone who takes early starts in their stride. You will be able to bend, stretch and lift/hold heavy objects as part of your day-to-day routine.
This exciting role offers a wide range of horticultural grounds maintenance experience which will support your Intermediate Apprenticeship, which includes an NVQ Level 2 qualification

Working Week : 37 hrs p.w. 5 days
Salary : £176.60 Per Week

Personal Qualities : Ability to travel to and attend place of work on time, and manage work tasks effectively.
Good communication skills, with a polite and friendly manner to build positive working relationships.
Team skills to work productively with a wide range of people.
Skills Required : Experience of gardening, this could be at home or volunteering
Keen interest in the practical, hands–on aspects of horticulture and grounds maintenance work
Able to bend, stretch and lift/hold heavy objects.
Future Prospects : Many of our previous Apprentices have successfully obtained employment in the Parks team upon completion.
Training to be Provided : Qualification: Level 2 Horticulture
College Attendance: There is no regular college attendance required as the qualification is delivered almost entirely in the workplace.
Training for all job specific tasks will be given. In addition the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make on-site visits every 6-8 weeks. There may be the occasional need to attend either the Otley or Easton campus for short training courses and tests.
Other Information : Pay Rates: The current NMW rate for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour with effect from 1st April 2017. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the Apprentice National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent in training.
